    Copper lines, a process that will take decades. According to data on the City of Milwaukee website, 621 lead service lines were replaced in 2017; 910 in 2018; and 65 so far this year. As of last year, the city still had more than 75,000 lead service lines. The cost of replacing the lines has been estimated at $750 million.

    Ann Arbor is planning to spend millions replacing many residents’ water lines due to lead risks, joining other communities doing the same due to new state regulations. The city has confirmed 932 addresses so far where there were once lead “gooseneck” pipe connections and galvanized pipes; these were replaced with safer copper pipes.

    The Lansing Board of Water and Light finished replacing thousands of lead serviceines with copper lines in 2016, a 12-year project that cost about $44.5 million. Recent state rule changes require local utilities to replace all lead and galvanized water service lines between the publicly-owned water main and a resident's water meter by 2040 at an average replacement rate of 5 percent per year.
