During the past ten millennia, copper has enabled mankind to progress beyond the Stone Age to ever-more-sophisticated technical achievements.

Today, copper does yeoman duty in the most-advanced products, such as microprocessors. At the same time, it performs everyday functions, delivering electricity, water, phone, cable and Internet service in residences and commercial buildings.

Copper is the main element in an ever-growing number of useful alloys–some 450 of them. They are critical in power generation and distribution, moisture protection, transportation, fire-protection systems and countless other ways not readily apparent to the public.

Since some hunter-gatherer in the Middle East stumbled over a nugget of native copper, mankind continues to depend on this most versatile of metals.
