Project Description: This project involved the removal of diamond shaped flat seam copper roofing and decorative elements that had been in place for over 90 years. The historic building elements were removed in order to repair damage to the roof substrate, physical damage to decorative elements, and the built in gutter. Once repairs were completed the historic copper flat seam roofing panels and decorative elements were reinstalled.

Project Description: When complete, the exterior wall and roofing surfaces of this magnificent addition will be entirely clad in copper. Currently, the pyramidal roofs are clad with diamond-shaped, flat seam panels. The wall areas, covered with protective underlayment in the photos, will be clad with rectangular, flat seam, copper wall cladding upon completion in late 2006.

Flat Seam Walls

Project Description: A flat seam copper wall cladding designed by a globally recognized emerging architectural firm highlights high end condominiums on a busy Atlanta street. Copper was selected to provide a classic, naturally weathering feel to a very modern building.

The copper contrasts nicely with an adjacent white cladding and will continue to do so for the life of the building. As the copper weathers the building will take on an ever changing appearance. Colors such as salmon pink, various browns and finally a rich green patina.

Project Description:The mission of St. Croix Lutheran High School is: “educating the total student - spiritually, intellectually, physically - in a caring Christian family community.” The community felt strongly that these three elements are present in their lives, but that a physical symbol of the spiritual education was missing, a chapel.

The chapel seats over 500 and allows for a variety of arrangements, responding to the dynamic needs of the people who worship in the chapel. The epiphanal seating enhances the sense of community and encourages interaction with the liturgy.

Worship here includes celebration through song and the spoken word, making acoustics an important aspect of the design. Each window at the sidewalls is angled, as are the coffers above the space frame, to direct and control sound. To help absorb unnecessary reverberation, padding is placed behind the curved copper walls.

Copper was selected because of its symbolic representation of life. When first installed, it is bright and contains all the promises that life has to offer. At this early stage, it is easily influenced by exterior elements, reflecting the colors of the sky. Soon after its exposure to nature, the copper begins to mature. Over the next 20 years it changes to varying depths of brown and begins to patina. In the final years, copper takes on a green and weathered appearance; a beautiful result earned from a productive and inspiring life.

CDA has also developed the Copper in Architecture Handbook which is a comprehensive resource presenting as much information about copper's properties, existing technology and application to the educational design and construction field as presently exists. CDA's architecture handbook is part of a multi-faceted program geared to the student, architect or contractor who is involved in the design or installation of copper, brass or bronze as an architectural element.
