Design Handbook: Section 2
Installation Equipment & Tools

Introduction   |   Equipment and Tools   |   Equipment Manufacturers

Introduction

In recent years, many different roofing systems and equipment have been developed to meet design demands and to reduce installation time. The result of such improvements is to provide more uniformity in appearance, greater flexibility in design and more economy in installation.

In response to the construction industry's needs, power forming and seaming equipment of universal design have been introduces for use by the contractor. This equipment provides completed on-site fabrication and installation in dramatically less time than traditional manual installation techniques.

There are two basic pieces of equipment that have had a significant impact on the efficiency of installing a copper roof system: the pan former or roll former and the power seamer.

Power pan formers are designed for forming pans or roof accessory shapes from flat sheet or coiled stock in lengths limited only by specific project requirements. Transverse seams may be totally eliminated when full length sheet or coiled stock is used.

Profiles can be customized with digital or mechanical controls and roll-formed at accurate speeds as fast as 40 feet per minute. Some of the common roll-formed shapes are indicated below. Power roll-forming equipment is designed for portable use when required for on-site fabrication.

Roll-forming equipment is designed for both standing seam and batten seam roof pan profiles. Available equipment can handle sheets from 12" to 27" in width and up to 20 oz. in weight.

Power seamers are available for both standing seam and batten seam roof systems. The use of power seamers allows for precise, uniform seams without hammer marks typical of hand-forming equipment. Seams can be completed at a rate of 15 to 25 feet per minute with great accuracy at a fraction of the time required by manual seaming techniques.
